EVC alarm integration with SOS Alarm
Connected Elster EK280 electronic volume corrector alarms to SOS Alarm through SMS intake and the SOS Access v4 protocol.
The problem
Elster EK280 electronic volume correctors could send SMS messages when alarms occurred, and those alarms needed to reach SOS Alarm for on-call handling.
What Henrik owned
Henrik implemented the LIS-200 readout protocol, built the alarm web service, implemented SOS Access v4 and deployed the Django application serverlessly on AWS Lambda.
Work delivered
- Implemented LIS-200 protocol handling for Elster EK280 electronic volume correctors
- Built a web service that receives EVC alarm SMS messages
- Processed incoming SMS messages through Twilio
- Implemented SOS Access v4 protocol support for sending alarms to SOS Alarm systems
- Deployed the Django application serverlessly on AWS Lambda
- Published the reusable SOS Access Python library as open source
Technical approach
The EVC sent alarm events by SMS, Twilio delivered the messages to the Django service, and the service translated them into SOS Access v4 alarm messages for SOS Alarm. SOS Alarm handled on-call duty and contacted the correct person depending on the alarm.
Where it stands
Ran in production for a couple of years and was later decommissioned when a SCADA solution was implemented. The SOS Access library was also tested against other alarm systems and is used by other systems to integrate with alarm management systems.
